Spc. Douglas C.

Desjardins had enlisted in the Army in 2004 and became a member of the 1st Armored Division.

Desjardins went by the surname Surprenant in Scio, the name of his stepfather, Jim Surprenant, and his mother, Cindy Surprenant. His father, Doug Desjardins, lives in Mesa, Ariz.

Desjardins attended elementary school in Scio before moving to live with his father. He attended middle school in Arizona, before returning to high school in Oregon and graduating in 2000, Jim Surprenant said.
Desjardins' mother said her son was proud of his service in the Army.

"Doug loved what he was doing. He believed he was serving God and country and protecting his family and loved ones here at home," she said. "We are very proud of him."

Desjardins' high school teacher and mentor, Craig Hamnquist, remembered the young man as a fun-loving student more interested in his classmates than in his studies.

"He had passion for other people," Hamnquist said. "He enjoyed other people. He enjoyed companionship. He enjoyed a good laugh."
