Jeffrey A. Ammon

1220651813ammon.jpg

Lt. Jeffrey Ammon indeed was among the best and the brightest, tackling a difficult nuclear engineering program at Oregon State University as part of his Navy submarine service.

As an undergraduate, he achieved the rare feat of obtaining a license to operate a nuclear reactor.

Ammon died May 24, 2008 from injuries he suffered from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Ammon, 37, was from Orem, Utah, but based in Bangor, Wash.

"Our program sees quite a few students with military ties, and as a general rule they are focused, dedicated, and a delight to have in class," said Kathryn Higley, Ammon’s academic adviser at OSU. "Jeff was no exception."
